Watch: How to use the new Launchkey in a DAWless setup
Discover why Launchkey is ideal for DAWless setups in music production. Connect hardware synthesisers, grooveboxes, and samplers to spark inspiration and create captivating musical performances.
In this episode of Novation Connects, the creative tools of the new Novation Launchkey are used to demonstrate how they work seamlessly with hardware synthesisers like the Elektron Digitone and Circuit Rhythm. This live jam showcases how the Launchkey empowers creativity and performance with its intuitive features and design.
One controller, two sounds
Using the Split button in the Zones feature, the bassline is played on the left-hand side of the keyboard while rich harmonies are layered using the Chord Map feature. For the lead, the right-hand section of Launchkey is used to play the melody with the Arpeggiator and its 8-Step Sequencer. Patterns are enhanced by removing steps, adding accents, ties, and ratchets, creating a dynamic and evolving feel.
Focus on the performance with Scale Mode
Activating Scale Mode on the new Launchkey enables a focus on creativity without worrying about hitting the wrong notes. With the keys and pads locked into scale, it’s easy to seamlessly combine Chord Map Mode with performance techniques to add variation.
Total control with MIDI mapping
MIDI mapping plays a pivotal role in the performance. The Digitone’s filters, volumes, and mutes are mapped to Launchkey's encoders, faders, and buttons, providing hands-on control over the synth’s tonal dynamics.
During the breakdown, the Layer button in the Zones feature and Fixed Chord features are used to play both a bass chord and lead arpeggios with a single note. The lead line is then expanded by adding new notes via the Arp Sequencer, keeping the energy fresh and captivating.
Seamless transitions and a dynamic finish
Transitions back to the main groove are achieved by unmuting the synth tracks using the Launchkey’s MIDI-mapped buttons and jamming with additional Chord Map features, experimenting with various inversions and chord shapes. The performance concludes with a smooth fade-out, using the MIDI-mapped faders to control the Digitone’s track volumes, leaving the audience with a polished and professional finish.
